Flippity.net Spelling Words – Create Online Spelling Word Practice!

WHO: Teachers that are looking for an interactive tool to help students study spelling words.

HOW: Teachers visit http://flippity.net/ (a bunch of great tools for teachers!), click on instructions under Flippity Spelling Words, then follow the instructions given on the page.  Teachers need to have a G Suite for Education (Formerly known as Google Apps for Education) account as this functions through a Google Sheets spreadsheet.  After making a copy of the template and adding it to their Google Drive account, teachers will then be able to add in their own words and create their own categories.  In the example, flippity.net uses individual students names to have personalized lists.  Another option may be to put in the spelling lists by week, this would allow students to work ahead if they would like.  The teacher may also decide to put all of their students as the categories and keep the same words in each group, couple this style with the “e-mail to” row in the spreadsheet, and the teacher can have each individual students results e-mailed directly to them.

When adding in words, it is important to note that you can put in a sentence using quotation marks after the word, this will speak to the student and give an example.  This is needed in the case of homonyms.  Another important note to your students is that in the practice and quiz section, the words are case-sensitive.

Once the words are in place, the teacher will need to go up to “File” then “Publish to web….” and finally “Publish”. The user will be prompted to note the URL, this will need to be copied to the clipboard.  Next, go back to the spreadsheet and look at the bottom of the page, there the user will see some tabs.  Click on the “Get the link here” tab, and paste the URL into the highlighted cell. Once this is completed, the teacher can click on the “Click here to go to your Flippity.net spelling words” and see their list live in action.  Copy and paste the new link from the address bar, share the link with students, and enjoy!

WHEN: This tool is excellent for teachers that would like students to get some help with their spelling words.  This is an easy way to get parents involved as well.  Send the link in an e-mail to all of the parents and let them work on it with their students on the computer, tablet, or even on a smart phone!

Step 1: Modify the Google Spreadsheet Template

  • Make a copy of this template. (You’ll need to sign-in with your Google account.)
  • Edit the Student names. You can have up to 50 lists.
  • Edit the Words lists.
    • Add a phrase in quotes to clarify homonyms.
    • Note: Practice and Quizzes are case-sensitive.
  • Optional: Add an email address in the Email Results to line to automatically receive quiz results.
    • (You can have multiple email addresses separated by commas.)
  • Optional: Label your spelling words by changing the name of the worksheet (at the bottom).

Step 2: Publish Your Spreadsheet

  • Go to File, Publish to the Web…, then click Publish.
  • Copy the link under the Link tab.

Step 3: Get Your Flippity.net Link

  • Click on the Get the Link Here tab of the template (at the bottom).
  • Paste the link in the light green cell (A3) to get the link to your Flippity Spelling Words.

Step 4: Click, Bookmark, and Share

  • Click on the Flippity.net link to see, practice, or take a quiz on your spelling words.
  • Bookmark the page to find it again quickly.
  • Tell your friends and colleagues about Flippity.net.

Mystery Science – Ready To Go K-5 Science Lessons

WHO: Teachers looking for engaging activities tied to NGSS for their K-5 Science lessons.

HOW: While they are currently developing lessons for K-5, there are lessons available for classes in grades 2-5.  Teachers head over to http://mysteryscience.com/, sign up for an account (currently free until the end of the school year, annual membership pricing available here), and then select a lesson.  Each lesson starts with a questions and contains three components.  First is a video lesson, followed by a hands on activity, and also includes a list of materials needed for activity preparation.

WHEN: These lessons are great for science curriculum.  Teachers may use them once a week or model their entire course around them.

Chronas: Interactive Timeline For World History And More!

WHO: Teachers looking for an interactive digital resource to help with studying timelines, geography, and more.

HOW: Visit www.chronas.org, click on “Enter History”, and get started.  Users can scroll through the years using the timeline, zoom in/out on specific regions, or choose from many different options to populate the map.  Chronas is linked to useful Wikipedia pages to help give direction for research.

WHEN: Chronas is great for a self-study tool, a teacher led lesson, group work, and more.

Wizer.me – Interactive Digital Worksheets

WHO: Teachers looking to take their worksheets to the next level.

HOW: Teachers create an account at wizer.me, create an assignment, and assign to their class.  Options to assign include Google Classroom or direct link.  Students will need accounts as well.  Each assignment is given a unique pin number and teachers also have the option to share the assignment globally.  After completing an assignment, students can receive immediate feedback if the teacher has set it up.  Otherwise, Wizer.me will grade some items for the teacher automatically, then when the teacher finishes the assessment, they have the option to send student feedback.

WHEN: Teachers can use wizer.me as an opening/closing class activity, or as homework.  When creating an account, the system does not ask if the user is a student or a teacher, so the students are able to create these digital worksheets as well.  This is great for students to show mastery of content.

Triventy: Interactive Quizzes For Classroom Or Events

WHO: Teachers looking to engage students with classroom content in an interactive and engaging atmosphere.

HOW: Create an account at http://www.triventy.com/, create a quiz, and play with students.  While making a quiz, the teacher can add a quiz image as well as individual question images.  Teachers also have options for how long each question is given (5-60 seconds), making the quiz public, posting top 3 players during game, and sharing via social media after quiz completion. When making questions, teachers can invite others to create the quiz with them (great for student collaboration), and enter hints and “Did you know…” facts. Teachers can also make a question a “survey question” for in class polling.

WHEN: Triventy is a good option to end class for the day or week.  Students will be engaged during the quiz and enjoy competing against their classmates.

 

The downside to Triventy is that it does not collect quiz results for the teacher to use later.  This could be a great formative assessment tool if this feature were added.  It is not the perfect tool for class, but it is a fun change of pace.

Matific: Interactive Practice And Games For K-6 Math

WHO: Teachers looking for math practice that grabs students attention and keeps them engaged.

HOW: Teachers create an account at www.matific.com, create a class, and assign content to students. Content can be lessons (along with teacher guides) and activities.  Matific will collect data from the students, and even compiles reports to be sent home to parents.  Teachers can search through activities based on standards, curriculum, or book. By default, all activities are open to the class, but the teacher can lock all activities to control what students are working on.

WHEN: Matific is ideal for in class activities, flipped classroom, extended lessons, and more!

Code Combat: Learn Coding While Playing A Game

WHO: Teachers looking for a way to engage students in learning how to write code.

HOW: Students can sign up and start playing on their own, or a teacher can set up a class with student accounts and track progress. Code Combat teaches students to actually type code, the next step after the drag-and-drop blocks you see on most websites to teach code. Code Combat teaches students can choose from the following languages:
